What tear stains are
Dog tear stains are the reddish-brown marks that often appear from the inner corner of the eye down to the fur on the muzzle. They may come with damp hair, crusty discharge, or a faint odor, which is why many owners notice them long before they understand the cause. The stain itself is not the real problem; it is usually a sign that tears are sitting on the coat for too long or that the eye area is being irritated in some way.
How tear stains form
The basic process is simple: tears are produced, but they do not drain away normally or they are produced in excess. Once the fur stays wet, tear components can oxidize and leave visible color behind, especially on light-coated dogs. Over time, moisture can also attract debris and microbes, making the area look darker and harder to keep clean. That is why tear stains often reflect a mix of anatomy, environment, and grooming habits rather than a single cause.
Common triggers owners see
Some dogs are more likely to develop tear stains because of facial structure, such as short-nosed breeds or dogs with shallow eye sockets. Other common triggers include hair rubbing the eye, dust, smoke, pollen, blocked tear drainage, or eye irritation from a foreign body. In some households, owners also notice that certain foods, seasonal changes, or indoor air quality seem to coincide with more tearing, which is why watching patterns matters as much as cleaning the fur.
